The Four Codes of Creative Energy

A creative wellness framework designed to maintain creative energy without burning out

A CREATIVE WELLNESS FRAMEWORK

APRIL 2020 - CURRENT

The Four Codes of Creative Energy is a creative wellness framework and system designed to help creatives maintain a consistent connection to their creativity without burning out.

The Codes: Community, Craft, Clarity, and Condition.

The framework synthesizes research from four major domains: flow psychology and deliberate practice (Craft), mindfulness and metacognition research (Clarity), embodied cognition and exercise science (Condition), and social creativity and arts-in-health literature (Community).

I began experimenting with the Four Codes in April 2020 as a personal project that has expanded into the lens through which all Like Really Creative programming is filtered.

The Four Codes

  • COMMUNITY

Nurturing the biological need for shared healing and belonging

Connecting with, being supportive of, sharing with, collaborating with, and nurturing fellow creatives

  • CRAFT

Honing technical skill through pressure-free experimentation and learning

Practicing, learning, reading, experimenting, and playing

  • CLARITY

Filtering external noise to access the true creative self

Gaining self-awareness, meditating, journaling, sitting in silence, or reducing digital media

  • CONDITION

Generating physical vitality to metabolize emotional stress

Walking, dancing, conditioning training, free movement, resting, or regular exercise

THE CREATIVE ENERGY CYCLE

The Four Codes of Creative Energy are a living system. Each Code forms a distinct part of the creative cycle: Condition is about nurturing your physical and mental baseline through movement, rest, or self-care; Clarity is about clearing mental space, focusing attention, and gaining new insight; Craft is the development of skill and the act of making, whether writing, painting, or designing; and Community is the connection with others through sharing, collaboration, or support.

They feed into one another in a balanced interplay. You can enter the cycle at any point, but it only works when all four are in motion. When one Code eclipses the others, burnout follows. Burnout disconnects you from your creative self.

BRAND IDENTITY

Lots of white space, bold colors from the same color palette as the Like Really Creative brand. I wanted the Four Codes branding to be uncluttered, clean, and accessible; almost like a blank canvas.
